A veterinary physician, or more coloquially a veterinarian is a professional trained in the diagnosis and treatment of disease in animals. In most countries, they are educated and licensed in the same manner as physicians and have similar training and qualifications, including a great deal of clinical experience.
One almost exclusively limited to the treatment of farm animals, most veterinarians in Western nations now treat pets. In addition, surgery is becoming more common for the treatment of disorders (it was always common for purposes of sterilization or castration) and even fish such as Koi are receiving surgery to correct conditions.
