Uveitis is an inflammation of the middle layer of the eye. It is usually characterized by a red or pink tinge to the sclera or white part of the eye surrounding the iris.

Different types of uveitis are characterized by the location of the inflammation:

  • Anterior - affecting the iris and or the anterior chamber;
  • Intermediate - affecting the vitreous cavity;
  • Posterior - affecting the retina and/or choroid.

Uveitis is a medical emergency as the condition can result in blindness (and is in fact by far the most common cause of blindness). However, about 90% of cases affect only the anterior cells and are either self-resolving or can be resolved with simple treatment.

Uveitis is associated with a number of systemic diseases including Behcet's disease, Chronic granulomatous disease, Kawasaki's disease, Multiple sclerosis, Polyarteritis nodosa, Sarcoidosis, Lupus and Lyme disease.
