A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove chronically infected tonsils from the throat. Previously one of the most common operations, it's use has declined as less aggressive procedures, such as antibiotics, are now felt to be just as effective in treating chronic tonsillitis, some patients still get tonsillitis even without tonsils.
