Thyroiditis is any disorder that results in inflammation of the thyroid gland. They can cause either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. They can show a wide range of symptoms, none of which are unique to the condition. This makes the diagnosis somewhat of a zebra, but in most cases there are abnormalities in the thyroid that can be palpitated. Many, but not all manifestations of the disorder are caused by an autoimmune condition. All forms of the condition are more common in women than men.
