Tetrachloroethylene is a chemical compound of carbon and chlorine that is most commonly used as a dry-cleaning fluid, a paint stripper and a spot remover. Although it is colorless, its odor can be detected at even low concentrations.

Although it is a very stable chemical and is not very toxic , it does have effects on human health. It is thought to be a carcinogen, and long term exposure increases the risk of Parkinson's disease. If heated, it decomposes into phosgene, a very toxic gas. It acts as a central nervous system depressant and can irritate skin.
