Show Information

Stimulant psychosis is a form of psychosis caused by the use of drugs, usually an overdose of illegal stimulants, but in some cases because of a therapeutic dose of a prescribed drug. Because the causes are different, stimulant psychosis usually will not react the same way to treatment that is typical for psychosis caused by an organic disease or mental illness. It can usually be distinguished by the appearance of addition symptoms, such as aggression, diarrhea, dilated pupils, high blood pressure, hyperthermia, nausea, rapid breathing, seizures tremors and vomitting.

The stimulants that are the most likely to cause psychosis are amphetamines and cocaine. Ritalin is the prescribed drug that is most likely to cause the condition.

If the condition is caught early, anti-psychotics can be helpful, but in most cases the patient will merely need supportive care and the condition will resolve itself with time.
