Silicon is a chemical element (atomic number 14). It is chemically similar to carbon, but is less reactive.  It is a common element being found in sand and most rocks. In most cases, silicon and it's compounds do not react with biological tissues, and it is often used for cosmetic purposes, such as in the use of breast implants.
