Schizoaffective disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis to describe patients who present with the psychosis typical of schizophrenia together with the mood disorders typical of bipolar disorder but do not meet the strict diagnostic criteria of either disease. Once thought to be an episodic illness, it is now treated as a continuing illness with differing severity of symptoms.
