Rape or sexual assault is an assault directed at the primary or secondary sexual characteristics of the victim where the victim does not provide consent or does not have the necessary capacity to give consent (for example, due to age, lack of intellectual capacity, or unconsciousness).
Sexual assault often is accompanied by trauma to the vagina or anus, and may be accompanied by lacerations or severe bruising caused by the attacker. It is also usually acompanied by mental trauma, up to and including post-traumatic stress disorder. It can also increase the risk of suicide. It should be treated as a medical emergency no matter what the physical condition of the patient.
