Porphobilinogen is a precursor involved in the production of heme. In acute intermittent porphyria, the lack of a certain enzyme results in an accumulation of porphobilinogen in the body's tissues. It is eventually passed in the urine where levels can be tested to confirm a porphyria diagnosis during an attack.
