Photofluorography is a technique using X-rays where the image is projected on a fluorescent screen which glows under x-ray exposure instead of exposing photographic film. A photograph or video is then taken of the screen for future reference. The technique is commonly used for screening purposes to diagnose diseases that show obvious lung involvement such as tuberculosis or lung cancer, allowing a quick evaluation by the radiologist without having to wait for the development of the photographic film. The technique can also be used to focus on a particular part of the chest for further examination should the radiologist spot something suspicious without having the patient returned for a further x-ray.
