A neurotransmitter receptor is any protein that is found on a membrane that binds to a neurotransmitter. The binding of the two molecules controls the ion channels of a nerve cell, causing it to activate or deactivate depending on the stimulus. The neurotransmitter will not have this effect in isolation. Different receptors appear in different places in the nerve cell, regulating when they can be activated by surrounding cells.
