A neurotransmitter is an organic chemical that transmits nerve and brain impulses across the synapses that separate nerve cells and neurons. The well understood neurotransmitters are glutamate, aspartate, D-serine, gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine, dopamine, norepinephrine, adrenaline, histamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, adenosine, anandamide, and nitric oxide.

Many neurological illnesses and mental illnesses are currently thought to be due to some disruption in the regulation of neurotransmitters.
