A muscle relaxant is a class of pharmaceutical that affects the function and tone of muscles. They have many medical uses including the treatment of spasms, muscle pain and hyperreflexia. They are also commonly used as an adjunct to anesthesia and to induce paralysis during intensive care and emergency care. There are two different sub-classes - drugs that affect the relationship between nerves and muscles, and those that prevent muscle tissue from contracting.

Although neither class affects the central nervous system, their major risk is heart failure, although they have their greatest effect on muscles that are attached to the skeleton (unlike the heart).
