Dr. Murphy was a qualified surgeon at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.
In the episode Autopsy, he performed an exploratory surgery on a nine year old terminal cancer patient in an attempt to find a tumor in her heart. After finding it they successfully removed it. He also performed a procedure to remove a blood clot in the patient's brain. Dr. Foreman had claimed he had seen the clot however Dr. Murphy didn't see it at first, Dr. Foreman assured him that it was there and he found and removed the clot. The operation was a success.
