Midrodine is a pharmaceutical used to raise blood pressure in the treatment of conditions such as dysautonomia and orthostatic hypotension. It works by stimulating the tone of blood vessels, but because of it's mechanism of action, does not have any effect on the blood vessels of the heart. In addition, it cannot cross the blood-brain barrier and has no adverse effects on the central nervous system.
It has to be avoided in patients who suffer serious conditions of the heart and kidneys, or in patients who retain urine, or who already suffer from high blood pressure. It has other side effects such as headache and head pressure, flushing, confusion, dry mouth and anxiety.
