Metabolic acidosis is acidosis caused when the body produces too much acidic material that is released into the bloodstream, or where normal amounts of acid are produced and are not removed by the kidneys. It does not include acidosis caused by respiratory problems. It can be caused by several different conditions.
It causes prosaic symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, headache and altered mental status. As the acid level in blood increases, it can lead to coma and arrhythmia. The only way to confirm the condition is by testing for blood gases.
No matter what the cause, the condition is a medical emergency and should be immediately treated with sodium bicarbonate.
