Lactated Ringer's solution is a variation of Ringer's solution which also contains lactic acid. It's chemistry is also balanced so that it has the same sodium and potassium content as plasma. It is used to replace fluids lost because of blood loss or burns where there is also a risk of acidosis because the lactic acid, when metabolized by the liver, is converted to bicarbonate to neutralize the acidic ions. This is the most likely when fluid loss is very severe and the patient needs fluids over a period of several hours.
