The hepatic vein is the major vein that drains blood from the liver. It's often referred to on House M.D. as an approach for a biopsy of the liver in a patient who's suffering from a bleeding disorder as, if the biopsy causes bleeding, it will drain into the vein instead of causing internal bleeding.
