Hematin or Hemin is a pharmaceutical used in the treatment of porphyria. It is made of porphyrin molecules attached to an iron molecule which is then also bound to either a chloride (Hemin) or a hydroxide (Hematin). It works in the liver to allow faster heme production, which means there are fewer free porphyrins floating around in the blood which can lead to a porphyria attack. It is produced from red blood cells.
