A genotype describes a gene or set of closely related genes that affect a particular inherited characteristic, such as eye colour. In genetic medicine, genotypes are identified both for determining the heritability and probability of genetic diseases and to identify the particular gene responsible for those diseases. They can be studied further to determine their function so that the etiology of a genetic condition can be better understood. This can assist with the development of a treatment.
