Gastric lavage or stomach pumping is a medical procedure where the contents of the stomach are cleaned out. It has been used for over 200 years as an initial treatment for ingestion of toxins, but can also be used prior to emergency surgery to prevent nausea or vomiting while under anesthesia, Less often, it is used to determine the extent of bleeding in the upper digestive tract and to cool patients suffering from hyperthermia.
