Enterococcus are a genus of bacteria. Although common in the human intestines, there are also several species that can lead to infections including urinary tract infection, bacteremia, endocarditis, diverticulitis and meningitis. They are extremely hardy in the environment and are able to withstand a large range of temperature variations and high salt concentrations.

Enterococcus is often mistaken for the very similar streptococcus although they tend to have different resistance to different antibiotics.
