Diuretics are pharmaceuticals that encourage the production of urine. They're used in the treatment of heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure, and some kidney diseases.

There are several different classes of diuretics, each of which has a set of side effects which can include decreased blood volume, changes of potassium levels, low sodium levels, alkalosis, acidosis, increase in calcium levels, and increase of uric acid levels.
