There are two common diseases that are referred to as Diabetes:

Diabetes mellitus - The one usually being referred to, which is caused by a lack of the glucose regulating hormone insulin.

Diabetes insipidus - A less common disease, caused by a lack of the hormone vasopressin which regulates the production of urine by the kidneys.

Both diseases cause increased urination and thirst and derive from the Greek word for "siphon".
