Depo-provera(TM) is a brand name for a prepared contraceptive pharmaceutical injection where the primary active ingredient is progesterone.  It is often preferred over other contraceptives such as the pill as it only has to be administered by injection every three months to be effective and is effective immediately after the injection. It is more than 99% effective when administered as directed. It also has fewer side effects than the pill due to its lack of estrogen. It is also used to treat endometriosis.

The major side effect is bone loss, but it also should not be used in patients with serious clotting issues, migraines, a past history of breast cancerliver disease, high blood pressure or diabetes.

In males, depo-provera is used for chemical castration as it significantly reduces sex drive.
