The chest, or more formally the thorax, is that part of the body that on humans is below the neck and above the abdomen. It contains several major structures including the ribs, heart and lungs. It is largely separated from the neck by the shoulder girdle and from the abdomen by the diaphragm. The major organs are each surrounded by empty cavities which allow them to expand freely.
