Ceftriaxone is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It is from the cephalosporin group of antibiotics derived from the fungus acremonium. It is often an antibiotic of choice due to its effectiveness and relative safety. It also is very soluble in water, making it easy to administer intravenously. Its side effects are similar to cephalosporin. It is usually used to treat bacterial pneumonia, bacterial meningitis, gonorrhea, Lyme disease and typhoid fever.
