Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)[]

Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation is a rare pathological disease in which the blood starts to coagulate throughout the body. There are many effects this disease can have on the body, this includes; thrombosis and hemorrhages, but it can occur in solid tumors as well as a paraneoplastic syndrome.

Causes

There are many causes of DIC, examples include:

- Infections - Tissue trauma - Liver diseases - Cancers

Treatments

The main treatment of this condition is to treat whats causing it. Anticoagulants are only given when the thrombosis symptom is getting closer to causing death. Platelets may be transfused if counts are less than 5,000-10,000/mm3 and massive hemorrhage is occurring, and fresh frozen plasma may be administered in an attempt to replenish coagulation factors and anti-thrombotic factors, although these are only temporizing measures and may result in the increased development of thrombosis.
