Carcinoids are slow growing tumors that originate in the nerve cells that interact with the endocrine system. They are generally benign and don't show any symptoms, although if they are found during other surgeries, they are still dangerous enough to remove routinely. When they do show symptoms, they are typical of overproduction of one or more hormones, which can lead to diarrhea, flushing, wheezing, abdominal cramps, and edema in the peripheries. Carcinoid syndrome is typical when these tumors metastasize.

Surgery is the preferred option as these tumors generally do not respond to chemotherapy due to their characteristically slow growth, even after metastasis.
