Bronchoconstriction is a constriction of the airways in the lungs due to the contraction of the surrounding muscles. It is characterized by coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. It can be caused by spasms of the muscles surrounding the lung, inflammation of the bronchii, or excessive production of mucous. Any of these conditions will cause the release of acetylcholine which triggers the muscle contraction.

The most common causes of bronchoconstriction are emphysema and asthma. However, it can also be caused by excessive exercise and allergies.

Several classes of drugs are effective against bronchoconstriction including steroids, adrenergic agonists and anticholinergics.
