A bilateral cingulotomy is a surgical procedure used to treat some forms of mental illness. It targets the anterior cingulate cortex in the limbic system. It was first developed as an alternative to lobotomy as it was hoped this procedure would have fewer side effects. It is often used to treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and certain forms of chronic pain, but clinical studies have shown it does not have a consistent positive outcome.
