Ascites is an accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, usually accompanied by swelling of the abdomen to the point of distension, similar to a pregnancy. It's usually caused by diseases of the liver, particularly cirrhosis and advanced cancer. However, it can also be caused by several zebra conditions. As such, further diagnostic tests must be performed including blood tests, basic metabolic panel, liver enzymes, ultrasound and removal of the fluid (which is also an effective symptomatic treatment). Diuretics are also an effective symptomatic treatment.
