Anxiolytics are a loosely defined class of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of anxiety. They include barbiturates, benzodiazepines, antihistamines, and narcotics, each of which has a different mechanism of action.

Beta blockers are also prescribed for their anti-anxiety effect.

Alcohol initially reduces anxiety, but this effect soon reverses itself, making the person more anxious.
