Anticonvulsants or antiepileptics are a class of pharmaceuticals that are used in the treatment of seizures and are also used to treat bipolar disorder. They work by suppressing the rapid firing of neurons that are characteristic of a seizure. They include the barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and sulfa drugs.
