A quick Google provides a variety of numbers, usually x in 1 million or x in 100 000 (or simply touted as ''rare''), which is a far cry from the statistic added in the article. Perhaps they meant 1 in 2000 stroke victims? This effect was first discovered by Paul Erhlich, who noticed that dye injected into animals was never seen in the brain.  However, he did not understand the significance of the lack of dye, putting it down to a poor affinity between the dye and brain tissue.  However, one of his students later injected dye directly into the cerebro-spinal fluid and noted the brain did take up the dye.
